The Comprehensive Movement Assessment
We exercise for a number of reasons. Some for aesthetics, wishing to change how they look or how they feel about themselves. Others are competitive, with themselves or others, wanting to move more weight, perform intriguing exercises, or gain an edge over their opponents. We also have those trying to recover from an injury that is impeding their goals and daily activities, or they are looking to prevent an injury to maintain the ability to play for as long as possible. Regardless of why we exercise, we all have one thing in common, we are purposely moving with a desired outcome in mind. In some way, we want to improve our performance. How the body moves directly impacts how it looks, how it feels, and how it performs at any given task.
For me, exercise is a means to an end, not the objective itself. Just as I want to be able to meeting the physical demands of building things on my property–walls, flower beds, walkways, patios, etc.–you may want to excel at your sport or activity. While the activities we perform may be different, they are similar in that they are based upon the same foundational Primal Pattern® movements–or I believe they should be.
When you become a client, we begin by assessing how you move. We uncover strengths and weaknesses, imbalances and compensations. Consider what you are capable of today in spite of the issues that may be present. Imagine what you might be able to do tomorrow when you begin to investigate these healing opportunities and you begin to move with increased efficiency, athleticism, control, and grace!
Keep in mind that I will assess you from a physical or mechanical perspective. That makes the most sense when you are attempting to get stronger, move better, or heal from an injury in order to increase your performance. However, there may be contributing factors outside of movement that can impede your progress. These factors include your diet, rest/sleep habits, hidden internal/external stressors, use of supplements, and more. I mention this because manifesting your movement potential requires efficiency and healthy function in all aspects of your life. We want to increase the likelihood of success and the efficiency of your workouts while reducing or eliminating any and all blocking factors, including injury. When we work together, we will likely discuss aspects of your life beyond just the physical training program where they are relevant.
Below are a sampling of tests that I utilize with clients and a brief overview of what they can offer the process. I have a diverse array of tools at my disposal depending upon the specifics of your situation.
