External Hip Rotation

In this test, we are assessing external rotation of the hip. As with all joints, there are normal ranges of motion (ROM) we expect to see. As mentioned with the previous test, hip function is vital to health and performance.

The hip joint is designed to be mobile, capable of significant ROM in all planes. Altered hip ROM can be detrimental to performance in practically all sports and activities. Compensation will increase stress on other joints and tissues, especially those directly above (lumbar spine) and those below (knee, ankle, arches, and toes).

Whether the limited range of motion is a result of habitual use patterns or, in unusual instances, a congenital defect, understanding what is possible is helpful when mobility is restricted. Regardless of how the body manifests itself, there are always opportunities to take advantage of.
